The Idaho State-Civic Symphony receives financial support from three sources: ticket sales, grants, and contributions from individuals and businesses. Help us to continue to improve your symphony with your tax-deductible contribution. Planned Giving: It's Easier Than You Think

Creating a legacy of giving is easier than you think. As you prepare for and welcome a new year, take some time to start creating your legacy at the organizations you care about most, like the Idaho State-Civic Symphony.

Here are two ideas to help you get started.

1. Name the Idaho State-Civic Symphony as a beneficiary. This arrangement is one of the most tax-smart ways to support the Idaho State-Civic Symphony after your lifetime. When you leave retirement plan assets to us, we bypass any taxes and receive the full amount.

2. Include the Idaho State-Civic Symphony in your will or living trust. This gift can be made by including as little as one sentence in your will or living trust. Plus, your gift can be modified throughout your lifetime as circumstances change.

Gifts from a tax advantaged account, such as an IRA, provide you distinct benefits. The most obvious is that the gift will not affect your monthly expense budget. Also, a charitable donation from your IRA helps to satisfy your RMD (required minimum distribution) after the age of 72 years. There is no tax due on the amount of your gift. This tax-deductible gift from your income can also potentially lower your tax bracket for the given year of the gift. You incur this benefit whether you itemize your donations or not. Consult your financial advisor, as the gift needs to transfer directly from your account to the 501(c)3. The gift can be either a cash gift or stock. Gifting stock that has appreciated in value can also save you from being taxed on the gain of the stock.

Gifting from a non-qualified brokerage account

Gifting stocks, mutual funds, and ETFs that you have owned for over a year and that have appreciated in value is a great way to avoid paying the capital gain tax on the growth. For example, in a non-qualified investment account, equities have the opportunity to grow with the market. If you sold some/all of the holding you would have a (realized) capital gain, and could pay tax. Instead consider gifting shares of the appreciated stock, without selling first. No tax will be due on your gift and the donation amount can reduce your taxes (if you itemize your deductions).
